The Brief

The BMW X5 is built to handle both city streets and demanding terrain with equal confidence. The brief was to communicate this dual capability in a dealership environment, where the audience is already interested but needs a reason to feel genuinely excited about the vehicle. The challenge was to say something about off-road performance without leaving the showroom. An urban SUV that has capabilities.


The Execution

A standard city street map was crumpled and scrunched into a three-dimensional form, transforming the flat urban grid into something resembling a topographical landscape, with peaks, valleys and uneven terrain rising out of the frame. Mounted in a clean silver poster frame on the dealership wall, with the BMW X5 logo sitting quietly in the corner, the piece said everything without a headline.

The familiar city map, the one every driver knows as flat and navigable, suddenly looked like wilderness. The message was immediate: the X5 handles whatever the city throws at it, and then some.

The Outcome

The poster won awards both locally in South Africa and internationally, recognised for the simplicity and craft of the idea.

A single object, one gesture, no copy, and a complete product truth communicated in seconds.
