The Brief

In South Africa, the “bakkie” (pickup truck) is more than a vehicle. It's a statement of character. Tough, capable and built for a country that demands both. The Ford Ranger Montana was a facelift model that needed to communicate something slightly different: that this generation of Ranger didn't just work hard; it looked good doing it. The brief was to hold two truths at once. Tough and beautiful. Neither compromising the other.

The Execution

A man shaves using a large, rough knife as his razor, his face reflected in the flawlessly polished chrome grille of the Ford Ranger Montana. The grille becomes his mirror. The knife does the work. Shot in extreme close-up, the image fills the frame with chrome, light and the raw detail of both the man and the vehicle.

The headline lands simply underneath: Good looks. With a whole lot of tough. The ad didn't explain the idea. It demonstrated it. The truck was so precisely finished it could double as a bathroom mirror. The man using a hunting knife to shave confirmed that neither the vehicle nor its driver had gone soft.

The Outcome

The campaign landed at a critical moment for the Ranger Montana launch, driving strong consumer response and contributing to exceptional sales performance for the model. The creative was widely recognised within the industry as a benchmark example of automotive advertising done right, balancing product desire with genuine brand character.
