The Brief

The Salvation Army has been a lifeline for South Africa's homeless and vulnerable communities for generations, providing clothing, food and human support to those who have fallen through society's cracks. The brief was to communicate the emotional core of that work: not charity in the transactional sense, but something deeper.

The restoration of dignity. The campaign needed to move people, not just inform them. Visually depict how donation support improves people's lives.

The Execution

A family, clearly weathered by hardship, was photographed in a derelict building with crumbling brick walls, a broken fireplace and worn furniture. But instead of being shot as a document of poverty, they were posed and lit as a formal Victorian family portrait, the kind you'd find hanging in a gallery or a stately home.

The image was then placed inside an ornate gold frame, complete with a brass plaque that read simply: Restoring Dignity. The Salvation Army. The tension between the grandeur of the format and the rawness of the reality was the idea. It didn't ask for pity. It asked for respect.

The Outcome

This execution won a few local awards and received a special mention in the South African media and marketing press

(Orchids & Onions) as a standout piece of the year.
