The Brief

MTN is Africa's largest telecommunications network. In the era before WhatsApp, SMS was the primary text communication tool and a significant revenue stream. The brief was elegantly simple: if every MTN customer sent just one additional SMS per month, the business would double its SMS revenue. No new customers needed. No price changes. Just one more message per person. The creative challenge was to make people reach for their phone and type rather than call, by showing them situations where a text was simply the smarter choice.


The Execution

A series of three television commercials, each built around a scenario where making or taking a call was either impossible or socially awkward. Too noisy to hear anything in the rain. Too loud in a busy hair salon. Too quiet in a room full of sleeping babies. Each spot landed the same truth with a different comic situation: sometimes a call just doesn't work. An SMS always does. The campaign was warm, relatable and grounded in moments every South African would immediately recognise.

The OUTCOME

The campaign significantly exceeded MTN's expectations, not only meeting the targeted revenue uplift for the period but doubling the response the business had projected. For a campaign built on such a straightforward behavioural nudge, the results were remarkable.
